If you’re like me, all you know about GEICO is from their commercials with the animated gecko or the cavemen. While there’s something to be said for their creative marketing tactics, how does the provider stack up against car insurance competitors?
GEICO is the fourth largest private passenger auto insurer in the United States and one of the fastest-growing auto insurance providers to boot! That’s pretty impressive, right? With more than 20,000 associates and twelve major offices around the country GEICO offers services to meet the insurance needs of all types of drivers. According to the 2008 National Auto Insurance Study put out by J.D. Power and Associates, GEICO was rated ‘better than most’ when it came to competitive rates and ease of billing/payment (4/5 stars), while overall experience garnered them a solid ‘average’ score (3/5). The survey polled responses from 21,236 policyholders surveyed in April and May of 2008. Together, GEICO’s lower rates and clever television ad campaign might be enough to win over younger drivers seeking a provider; however, with most of their business conducted through call centers and online, what about drivers seeking more personalized attention?
Actual customer reviews on sites like epinions.com are mixed. Overall, customers appear to be satisfied with GEICO’s simple online claim forms and the general ease of the online experience. If you’re the type of driver who is content with no face to face communication with your insurance agent, then GEICO might work for you. Based on its predominant online presence and savvy advertisements, GEICO is clearly geared toward a younger, hipper, more computer-literate driver base. Whoever you wind up choosing as your car insurance provider, it definitely pays to shop around first – never settle!
