In the state of Massachusetts, every driver is required to have auto insurance. The 3 types of insurance coverage that are required are personal injury, standard liability, and uninsured motorist insurance. Drivers are able to purchase additional coverage to suit their particular needs, but the state only requires these 3 coverage types.
Every driver is required to have personal injury insurance to help cover the cost of injuries and medical bills. Since Massachusetts is a “no fault” state, this means that drivers are covered to an extent, regardless of who is at fault in the event of an accident. The required amount of coverage for a driver is $8,000, but that can be lowered if you agree to pay a higher deductable in the event of an injury.
Massachusetts law also requires that drivers purchase standard liability coverage. This policy covers drivers up to $20,000 a person, $40,000 for all, and $5,000 for damages incurred to the other driver’s car or personal property.
Lastly, Massachusetts requires uninsured motorist coverage for all drivers. This requirement is in place to insure that you are covered up to $25,000 for personal injuries or $50,000 total coverage if you are in an accident. Uninsured coverage allows you to receive financial compensation, even in the event that other driver involved in the accident is uninsured or under insured.
